Tech and Business

AI risks erasing traditional and local knowledge worldwide

Generative AI, trained on dominant digital data, often overlooks oral traditions and less represented languages, risking a global loss of diverse wisdom. This narrowing of accessible knowledge, termed 'knowledge collapse,' could disconnect future generations from critical cultural and ecological insights.

When you rely on AI tools for everyday information, you might not realize they're mostly reflecting dominant Western knowledge, sidelining valuable local wisdom and languages like Hindi or Tamil. This means important traditional practices, like sustainable farming or water management, risk fading away. Staying aware helps you appreciate and preserve these diverse perspectives, which are essential for handling environmental and social challenges closer to home.

Investigation launched into concentrated meatpacking industry

Following rising beef prices, an investigation targets the top four meat processors dominating 85% of the market. While supply issues like drought affect prices, longstanding industry consolidation raises concerns about competition and labor practices potentially harming producers and consumers.

If your grocery bill for beef feels steeper lately, this probe might shed light on why. The beef market is controlled by few big players, which can limit options and push prices higher. Better enforcement of fair competition laws could make a difference, helping ranchers get fair pay and you to enjoy more stable prices over time.

Texas Hidden History

Texas is home to one of America’s oldest continuously operated public libraries west of the Mississippi — the Diboll Library Room inside the old Sam Houston Memorial Museum complex in Huntsville. Built in 1839 as part of Sam Houston’s homestead, it later became a public reading room that preserved early Texas government papers, frontier literature, and rare Republic-era archives.
